A Jubilee of Mercy or a Veil for Injustice?

As Bishop John Iffert invites the faithful of the Diocese of Covington to celebrate the Jubilee Year 2025, themed “Pilgrims of Hope,” with promises of renewal, forgiveness, and mercy, his actions tell a different story. Behind the scenes, the bishop has suppressed the Missionaries of St. John the Baptist (MSJB), a thriving community known for their fidelity to Church teaching and their commitment to the Traditional Latin Mass.

The MSJB has been a beacon of reverence and orthodoxy in the diocese, with a history of collaboration and healing under Bishop Emeritus Roger Foys, who recognized their charism and supported their mission. Yet, under Bishop Iffert’s leadership, these priests have been unjustly sidelined and restricted, despite their unwavering service and adherence to the faith.

How can a Jubilee Year, meant to embody mercy and hope, coincide with actions that stifle faithful priests and disrupt a fruitful ministry? The suppression of the MSJB contradicts the very principles of renewal and reconciliation being proclaimed. If mercy begins at home, then it must also be extended to these priests and their vital mission.
